What is Hypnotherapy?
Firstly, we need to break down the word Hypnotherapy into Hypno and therapy which simply means using hypnosis as an approach for therapy. Hypnotherapy is basically a form of psychotherapy or counselling that uses hypnosis as a means of effecting deep and lasting changes.
Hypnosis is a totally safe and natural occurrence happening, ordinarily, every day of our lives. Hypnosis or "trance" is a normal human ability. Without going into hypnosis, you and I wouldn't be able to learn, concentrate or focus our attention to a task or action.
We have all found ourselves engrossed, for example, in a good book or film where all background noise and activities seem to disappear, or have been on a car journey where you just don't remember the journey! This happens because your focus of attention has narrowed to cut out the distractions around you, so you can concentrate on the task in hand be it reading or driving for example.
When we are in this state of hypnosis or trance we can feel blissfully relaxed, just like enjoying a pleasant daydream. A good description of the hypnotic or trance state is 'parallel awareness'. The hypnotised person knows who and where they are but are also strongly focused on internal realities such as sensations, memories or imagination.
To summarise, therapeutic hypnosis is a peaceful, creative and productive state of inner absorption. Being able to fully relax and have the ability to control emotional responses and create new connections will open up the path to allow new learning's, abilities and potentials to develop.
Please note that hypnotherapy can produce extremely successful and beneficial results. However, it is not a "magic wand." Clients must want to change and to work with the therapist so that goals can be achieved.
